Israeli Jets Destroy Syrian Anti-Aircraft Battery in Retaliatory Strikeā€

No people were in injured, and the Israeli jets returned safely, but not before attacking an anti-aircraft battery east of the Syrian capital of Damascus.

In a conference call with The Israel Project, which publishes The Tower, Ephraim Segoli, a retired IAF general, now with the Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies, said that the unsuccessful Syrian attack against the Israeli planes was something "unique" that Israel might have to address.

The anti-aircraft battery disabled in this attack had, according to Israeli intelligence, been the site of a confrontation in March with the Syrians.

Russian forces in Syria were notified in real time, Conricus said, adding that Israel holds Syria responsible for any attack from its territory. The SA-5 battery was "incapacitated" at about 10:00am.

An Israeli army spokesman said Israeli planes were conducting routine reconnaissance over Lebanon near the Syrian border when an anti-aircraft missile was launched at the Israeli jets.

The Syrian boldness, according to some experts, may have been a product of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's recent battlefield successes.

The Command warned of the "dangerous repercussions" of Israel's repeated aggression attempts, stressing Syria's determination to continue its war against the terrorist groups, Israel's arm in the region. The military's spokesperson has said that no hits had been confirmed.

The tit-for-tat incident came just a matter of hours before Sergei Shoigu, Russia's Defense Minister and vacation buddy of Vladimir Putin, was due to arrive in Tel Aviv for meetings with Avigor Liberman, Israel's defense minister. It has also occasionally carried out limited reprisals along its frontier with Syria in the Golan Heights, after spillover of Syria's fighting. Russian Federation is also backing Assad in the Syrian conflict.
