Google Maps Pulls Cupcake Calorie Counter After Backlash

Google Maps Pulls Cupcake Calorie Counter After Backlash”

Google Maps has swiftly canned an in-app feature that showed how many calories you'd burn by walking along a specific route - but not everyone is completely thrilled about it.

It then showed how many mini cupcakes those calories would be worth: i.e., walking from the Philly Voice offices to Suburban Station burns an estimated 35 calories, according to Google Maps, putting me in the clear to eat a third of a mini cupcake.

The app considered one mini cupcake to be equal to 110 calories.

Google has made a decision to get rid of the calorie tracking feature it had added to the Google Maps iOS app.

"Secondly, not everyone wants to know how many calories they have walked off, and this can become a numbers game and could be potentially an issue for someone with eating issues".

"Although it is good to encourage people to walk more, having the calories used on Google Maps does not seem to be the best way to do this..." It turns out that Wednesday is National Chocolate Cupcake Day (not to be confused with regular National Cupcake Day, which is December 15) - which would have been a prime opportunity for gimmicks galore to show off Google's cupcake calorie counter. For example, someone who weighs 250lbs will burn considerably more calories over that mile than someone who weighs 100lbs. "It was a test feature for iPhone users only, and will be removed later tonight from the app".

Critics also noted that preoccupation with calorie tracking is one of the hallmarks of anorexia nervosa, as well as other eating disorders. According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) 30 million people suffer from eating disorders in the United States and they have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. People burn calories at differing rates depending on a number of factors, such as weight and speed at which they're walking, as Harvard Medical School notes.
