Download Microsoft Edge preview for Android”

You'll be sent a link that will take you to the Play Store page for Microsoft Edge, where you can install the browser.

The DPA issued a lengthy release about the matter, in which it is explained that there are almost 4 million active Windows 10 devices with Windows 10 Home and Pro in the Netherlands. Most people simply click through option boxes hoping to get through to the end of the Windows 10 installation as soon as possible, and Microsoft is probably banking on this behavior to keep its preferred telemetry settings intact. "That results in an intrusive profile of yourself", said DPA's vice-chairman, Wilbert Tomesen. They are not informed which data are being used for what goal, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterward. The Microsoft Edge browser is now available for Android users. If this is not the case, the Dutch DPA can decide to impose a sanction on Microsoft.

The DPA adds that the firm also makes it impossible for users to give their consent to their personal data being processed.

I want our customers to know that it is a priority for us that Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro are clearly compliant under Dutch law. The first is to help Microsoft fix Windows for devices on which it experiences errors, and the second is for Microsoft to serve personalized ads to Windows 10 users.

These data are called "telemetry data".

If you use Microsoft Edge on your Desktop/Laptop as your default browser this is great as you will be able to sync your bookmarks, history, reading list etc across devices.

The Dutch DPA also states that while Microsoft has taken additional steps to improve transparency on its data collection in Windows 10 - thanks to the Creators Update - it still falls short of providing specifics that could give customers a clearer picture of how their data is being used. Additionally, the Dutch DPA has established that Microsoft has not respected existing privacy choices from some users when they upgraded to the Creators Update.

According to the Dutch DPA, Microsoft has already said that it intends to stop all of these violations of the European Union data protection law. As a matter of fact, launching the iOS and Android versions of the browser is no assurance that it will dominate and push others aside; a lot still has to be done.
