Collins declines gubernatorial bid, says she will stay in the Senate”

Sen. Susan Collins of ME, a moderate Republican who helped block her party's efforts to repeal Obamacare this year, said on Friday that she would not run for governor of her state next year, keeping her focus on Washington.

Collins repeatedly said it was a tough decision, but she received a standing ovation after her announcement. "As I thought about this senator's words, I realized how much remains to be done in a divided and troubled Washington if we are to serve the people of our states", she said.

For a time, it seemed like that number might shrink even further on the GOP side of the aisle, as Collins was widely rumored to be considering a run for ME governor in 2018, aiming to replace the hyper-controversial Paul LePage. She said a Senate colleague, whom she did not identify, had written her a note urging her to stay in the Senate.

Collins is Maine's senior U.S. Senator, having held her seat as a Republican since 1997. Susan Collins' decision to stay in the U.S. Senate.

Collins has made headlines during GOP-led efforts to repeal and replace the health care law commonly called Obamacare for voting against her party's stance.

After signing the order, Trump then advised the Democrats to come to the table and cut a deal with him, making it fairly clear that the entire effort ― despite the hugely negative effect it might have on many people's health and lives ― is part of the president's ongoing negotiating strategy. "And I have concluded that the best way I can contribute to these priorities is to remain a member of the United States Senate".

The pro-abortion Republican senator who sabotaged a bill to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business will remain in the Senate.

Independents are a powerful force in ME politics, with Collins' Senate counterpart, Angus King, one of only two independents in the chamber.

Maine's Governor's office is next up for election in 2018, and a run for that office would have actually been Collins's second attempt at the job.

Collins also criticized President Donald Trump's move this week to end cost-sharing reduction payments to health insurers, one of the subsidies that helps tamp down premiums for Americans buying their health insurance on the individual market.
