ASI Killed In Clashes Between Police, Bimal Gurung's Supporters Over Gorkhaland Agitation

ASI Killed In Clashes Between Police, Bimal Gurung's Supporters Over Gorkhaland Agitation”

A sub-inspector was killed and four policemen were injured today when alleged supporters of GJM chief Bimal Gurung fired at them at a forest area near here where Gurung was suspected to be hiding.

By now, it is clear that Gurung has lost popular support in Darjeeling, said Anuj Sharma, additional director general of police (law and order). It left a police officer and a civilian killed and several others injured.

"The GJM workers, who were armed, started firing". The GJM cadres retaliated after police opened fire, sources said.

"We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices", he said.

The police have also recovered 500 rounds of bullets, 6 AK47 assault rifles and one countrymade pistol from the spot that was raided. The arms haul conclusively establishes his links with insurgent groups and Maoists, he added.

The security forces were moving towards Patlebas after receiving specific inputs that GJM president Gurung was camping in the area.

Restrictions have been imposed on entry to the village, a Gurung stronghold, and the police are conducting raids in the area.

Gurung has been on the run for quite some time, with the state police slapping cases under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, as also for waging war against the government and organising terrorist camps. "Bimal Gurung has to take responsibility", said Tamang, now in Kolkata, where he called on Banerjee.

The exchange of fire yesterday was the first incident of violence after the 104-day-indefinite shutdown in the hills was called off on September 26 by Gurung following an appeal by Union home minister Rajnath Singh.

The region's Nepali-speaking Gorkha community has always been holding protests demanding a separate Gorkhaland state within India to protect their Himalayan culture.
