United States launches its first military base in Israel to curb Iran

United States launches its first military base in Israel to curb Iran”

On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the establishment of the first permanent USA military base on Israeli soil charged with defending against rocket and missile attacks.

The base is located within the IAF's School of Aerial Defense and will house dozen of US soldiers permanently stationed in Israel as part of a task force.

Brig. Gen. Tzvika Haimovitch, head of the IAF's Aerial Defense Command, announced the establishment of the installation on Monday evening. The general stressed that the American presence would not hamper the IDF's ability to act independently against any threat to the security of the state of Israel.

A small group of US troops carrying out a missile-defense mission in Israel is taking up residence inside a new barracks building on an Israeli base in an effort to improve living conditions for troops.

"This is the first time that we have an American flag flying in an IDF base", Haimovitch said following the "historic and exciting" inauguration of the American base attended by senior American officials such as the American Defense Attaché. "It won't get us to 100 percent, but it will get us much closer to achieving important things during war". Approximately 100 USA soldiers have been stationed in the Negev Desert since 2012 operating the Band-X radar system to integrate signals from guided-missile Aegis destroyers, military satellites in space, and ground based interceptors, Gizmodo reported at the time. Gen. John Gronski, deputy commander of US Army National Guard in Europe, said the base "symbolizes the strong bond that exists between the United States and Israel".

The "base within a base" will be run by the USA military's European Command (EUCOM).

In April, Israel unveiled David's Sling, which was jointly developed with the USA and targets medium-range threats.

The U.S. has a history of donating billions of dollars of taxpayer money to fund Israel's military over decades. "It was instead shot down by one Patriot missile that was sacked by Israeli air defence soldiers". The Iron Dome, created to intercept short and medium-range missiles, played a key role during Operation Protective Edge, when Hamas launched dozens of rockets and missiles at Israel.

Last week, the IDF established a new Iron Dome battalion.

Haimovitch pointed to the long-range Arrow 3 and medium-range David's Sling missile defense systems that went operational over the past year, as well as the expansion of the short-range Iron Dome program.
