Uber Displeased: Petition to Save App in London Nears 1 Million Signatures”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he fully supported the decision to revoke Uber's licence, saying all companies needed to "play by the rules".

Tech investor Eileen Burbidge and chair of industry group Tech City UK, said on Friday: "I'm disappointed to see this decision because it does suggest that London is being more protectionist than innovative, given how extraordinarily popular Uber is in London".

The transport body has also questioned Uber's lack of responsibility regarding various security and public health issues, including its procedures for reporting severe criminal offences and obtaining medical certificates, as well its attitude towards driver background checks.

More than 640,000 Londoners have signed a petition to save Uber, after regulators in the capital refused to grant the online taxi application a new license to operate in the United Kingdom capital.

In a shockingly honest response to Uber losing its license in London, new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi told employees of the ride-hailing app that "there is a high cost to a bad reputation", as he urged the company to "learn how to be a better partner to every city we operate in".

Transport for London stunned the powerful U.S. start-up on Friday when it deemed Uber unfit to run a taxi service, in a major blow to the United States firm and 3.5 million users in one of the world's wealthiest cities.

More than 515,000 people entered their names by 1200 GMT on Saturday in support of the USA -based company, which urged users to sign in order to keep its cars on London roads.

More than 600,000 people have signed a petition to save Uber and more than 20,000 drivers have emailed the mayor after the shock decision not to renew permission on Friday.

"The mayor has made the right call not to relicense Uber", Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association, said. "They have let down their drivers and customers by failing, in the view of TfL, to act as a fit and proper operator".

Dave Prentis told Sky's Sunday with Paterson programme that Uber is a new development and "looks great on paper", but added: "What you can't ignore is the safety of the people who are being carried".

Since its 2012 launch, Uber changed the London scene and the black cab monopoly game by undercutting prices.

He said Uber had to address safety concerns and it was important that there was a level playing field across the private hire market.

To the Uber riders, the newspaper said, "TfL will look as if it bowed down to pressure from the capital's infamously protective black cabs".

"It's a technical decision that picks up the spirit of the age", said Tony Travers, an expert on local government at the London School of Economics.

The victorious Lobby team hit the net so many times that they failed to keep track of who scored all their goals.
