U.S. heavy bombers, jets deliver show of force against N. Korea

U.S. heavy bombers, jets deliver show of force against N. Koreaā€¯

Visiting her Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe as Tokyo responds to the increasing military threat posed by North Korea, May will visit Japan's flagship helicopter carrier for a military briefing before attending a national security meeting.

This might have been Kim's plan all along as he sought what to do next after North Korea's weapons development reached a point where it could test intercontinental ballistic missiles meant to reach deep into the USA mainland. Recently, however, North Korea fired a mid-range ballistic missile flying over the northern Japanese island of Hokaido.

It is equally easy for the hopeful and the well-intentioned - and nations on the margin of events, such as China - to call for negotiations or believe that some form of dialogue will lead to conflict resolution and change North Korean behavior.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has made it clear that he is ready to negotiate with North Korea, provided they are ready for nuclear disarmament.

"North Korea's actions are a threat to our allies, partners, and homeland, and their destabilizing actions will be met accordingly", Gen. Terrence O'Shaughnessy, the commander of the US Pacific Air Forces, said in a statement.

"Also, North Korea appears to have sought to gain the upper hand in its relations with the US" by demonstrating the capability of its new ballistic missile, it added.

It is easy for the United States and North Korea to posture and threaten - for North Korea to carry out nuclear and missile tests and for the USA to conduct B-1B bomber and F-35 flights and military exercises.

Earlier this month, North Korea produced six posters referencing the July launches, which experts believe are capable of reaching the us mainland.

The language from North Korea on Wednesday is as familiar as it is chilling, a declaration to the world to expect more missile tests. "I agree it was a reckless, provocative act, firing that over Hokkaido".

When asked about the tweet hours later, Mattis seemed to disagree, saying that "We are never out of diplomatic solutions".

Kim Jong Un said his nation has drawn a lesson "again that it should show action, not talk, to the USA imprudently denying the (North's) initiative measure for easing the extreme tension" and stressed that it will continue to watch America's demeanor toward the North and decide its future actions accordingly.

Pyongyang had previously announced a plan to fire a salvo of missiles towards Guam. He says the North Korean threat toward Guam is more about winning greater freedom of military action than about deterring flyovers of USA bombers or stopping the U.S.
