Trump waives USA shipping restrictions for Puerto Rico: spokeswoman”

Maria, the most powerful hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in almost 90 years, swept across the island last Wednesday with roof-ripping winds, knocking out the territory's entire power grid, unleashing severe flooding and causing widespread heavy damage to homes and infrastructure.

Trump faced mounting calls to freeze the 97-year-old act, which requires products shipped between US ports to be moved by American-owned ships.

While Puerto Rico tries to slowly recover from Hurricane Maria, drugmakers, who operate more than 50 plants and distribution centers on the island, are working to prevent shortages.

"We just wanted to more immediately start organizing and get the ball rolling and start raising money as soon as we could", Toro said.

But the Department of Homeland Security said that getting more fuel to the island wouldn't address its main problem, which is ports damaged by the storm. This is the most she can do for those still on the island awaiting help from the US mainland and President Trump, who has been criticized for not doing enough to help the people of Puerto Rico.

President Donald Trump's advisers are sticking up for the response to Hurricane Maria and the devastation in Puerto Rico. Reporter Arelis Hernandez tweeted on Tuesday that she caught one of the few commercial flights out of the mainland and to Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

Hurricane Maria hit the USA territory more than a week ago, leaving it without power and its roughly 3.4 million residents short on fuel and other supplies.

The Transportation Department is providing $40 million to Puerto Rico for emergency road and bridge repairs as the island deals with the fallout from Hurricane Maria.

Ricardo Castellanos makes twice-daily visits to two free Wi-Fi hotspots in San Juan - among the rare places these days where Puerto Ricans can still get online and in touch with relatives across the island and overseas.

In Washington, some politicians said the Jones Act waiver should last longer or that the law should be completely repealed. "I spoke to my brother and he said, 'Hey Adrian I don't know what is going to happen to my job now, so I might have no choice but to come to the mainland and work there for awhile.' Luckily I was able to get a flight reservation for my parents to fly up to CT".

"A foreign relief shipment to Puerto Rico, they have two choices", said Scott Miller, an global trade expert with the Center for Strategic & worldwide Studies.

"They're not giving us any information", said Castellanos, a business consultant.

"A lot of people have been hitting me up already".

By waiving the Jones Act, the United States will allow for more rapid delivery of aid to Puerto Rico.
