Trump hails Kuwait mediation on Qatar; Arab states react”

President Trump who staged a joint conference with the Kuwait leader shortly after his arrival in the White House also enjoined the leader and the Arab nations to all face alongside the USA their shared enemies. "We will be most successful with a united GCC", he said.

Trump, too, on Thursday offered support. It recently restored full diplomatic ties to Iran, with which it shares a massive offshore natural gas field that makes its citizens among the world's wealthiest.

Kuwait has been acting as a mediator since June 5, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt announced they were severing relations with Qatar and imposing a land, sea and air blockade against it, accusing Doha of supporting "terrorism". He noted that Qatar had been presented with a list of 13 demands by the other countries and was willing to discuss them.

Tillerson said the USA had agreed to "expedite" delivery of F-18 Super Hornet aircraft, sold to Kuwait a year ago as part of a $10 billion arms deal, and both countries agreed to expand sharing of counterterrorism and border security information.

Trump also said he would be "very upset" if Syria's government uses chemical weapons. In July, however, Kushner said that finding a peace deal might not be possible. "Dialogue on the implementation of the demands should not be preceded by any conditions", they said in the joint statement, while voicing "regret" about the Kuwaiti ruler's statement "on the success of mediation in stopping military intervention".

Trump also spoke to Qatar's al-Thani on Thursday. "I think it's something that's going to get solved fairly easily", Trump said.

He said both sides wanted peace and that the U.S. had "tremendous talent" working on the problem. I think the Palestinians would like to see it happen.

"We support his efforts to help bring about a settlement", Tillerson said of the Kuwaiti leader.
