Thousands of acres charred by La Tuna Fire near Los Angeles

Thousands of acres charred by La Tuna Fire near Los Angeles”

"The weather conditions are somewhat stable, but that could change at any moment".

Many others, including some that have been larger and claimed hundreds of homes, have burned through metropolitan Los Angeles County over the years.

Mayor of US city Los Angeles Eric Garcetti declared Saturday a local emergency in response to the largest wildfire by acreage in city history.

"Our biggest concern is the wind and weather", Terrazas said. Authorities were particularly concerned about how quickly the blaze could spread in the area's canyons.

The fire, dubbed "The Tuna" raged near Burbank, in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, on September 2, 2017. "If there is no wind, this fire is relatively easy to put out".

The blaze was first reported around 1:30 p.m.in Sun Valley.

An evacuation center was initially set up at Verdugo Hills High School, but officials relocated the shelter to Sunland Recreation Center in the 8600 block of Foothill Boulevard in Sunland. A surreal scene unfolded in Burbank as bright flames could be seen coming over the hilltops to the north of the city.

Place east of Stephen Road are being evacuated, but residents living on Amigos Drive or Antigua Drive have been told they may return home. Firefighters sent additional resources to that neighborhood for structure protection and to assist with evacuations.

Approximately 50 homes were threatened as the blaze turned toward residential areas in Burbank late Friday night, prompting mandatory evacuations.

The firefighters were praying for some relief in the heat waves that have been engulfed the state for few days. In the Sunland-Tujunga area, homes on Reverie Road, Tranquil Drive, Inspiration Way, Hillhaven Avenue and Glen O Peace Parkway north of the 210 Freeway were evacuated as the fire continued to grow.

"It's snowing ash from the Burbank fire, there was a huge pop followed by my power going out", said Cory Pratt, a filmmaker, on Twitter. "I mean, when it's hot and the gusty winds, it's been a bad mix of different things". At the following day, the flames expanded to all directions, leaving people without the possibility of returning to their houses - some of them haven't done it yet.

Officials warned of poor air quality throughout the area, and encouraged residents in affected areas to keep their windows and doors closed, and to avoid vigorous activities, the report said.

About 300 LAFD firefighters have been fighting the fire in addition to crews from Los Angeles County Fire, Glendale Fire, and Angeles National Forest fire departments.
