Small North Korea quake likely natural, not nuclear test, experts say

Small North Korea quake likely natural, not nuclear test, experts say”

Some analysts saw Kim's statement as a clear announcement that North Korea would ramp up its already brisk pace of weapons testing, which has included missiles meant to target USA forces throughout Asia and the US mainland.

The flight follows a week of heightened rhetoric from Washington and Pyongyang, with Trump and Kim Jong Un trading insults.

Trump's tweet comes after Kim Jong Un blasted the US President Donald Trump as "mentally deranged" and vowed to make him pay dearly for threatening to destroy his country. Kim took a page out of Yong Ho's book on Friday, saying "a frightened dog barks louder".

"I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the USA pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying [North Korea]", Kim said.

Lavrov on Friday again pushed a proposal by Moscow and Beijing for a dual suspension of North Korean weapons tests and the U.S.

He added, "The president obviously takes the responsibility of the security of the American people very seriously". But we are not in this alone.

President Trump said the measures would "cut off sources of revenue that fund North Korea's efforts to develop the deadliest weapons known to humankind".

Chinese leaders were long the North's diplomatic protectors but express increasing frustration with the government of Kim Jong Un.

"It will only push [North Korea] to pursue even riskier policies, because the survival of the regime is at stake".

Saturday's seismic activity came just hours before North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho - who warned on Thursday that North Korea could consider a hydrogen bomb test of an unprecedented scale over the Pacific - was due to address the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

While the US president hoped a military attack would not be necessary as the United Nations aimed to halt Pyongyang's nuclear weapon development through economic sanctions, Kim's regime is likely to be riled by the threat and lack of respect.

Trump's executive order expanded the Treasury Department's ability to target anyone conducting significant trade in goods, services or technology with North Korea, and to ban them from interacting with the US financial system. It will further escalate the war of words between the adversaries as the North moves closer to perfecting a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike America.

The Pentagon said the B-1B Lancer bombers came from Guam and the U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle fighter escorts came from Okinawa, Japan.

The larger one had a 3.4 magnitude, the group's initial assessment found, which is much smaller than anything declared as a nuclear test in previous years.

The statement suggests more powerful weapons tests are in the works. Missiles are giant tubes filled with explosive fuel.
