Radar Failure Triggers Major Delays At Sydney Airport

Radar Failure Triggers Major Delays At Sydney Airport”

"Due to an issue with the Air Traffic Control system at Sydney Airport this morning, there will be an impact to flights operating to and from Sydney today", Virgin said in a statement Monday morning.

So far, it's unknown when flights will be able to take off - stranding passengers on the first day of school holidays and causing chaos at the airport.

"Flights are delayed due to an @AirServices system issue".

About 7.20am on Monday, Sydney Airport thanked travellers for their patience. "Please check with your airline for flight status", the airport's official account said.

The software fault failed to convert from night-shift operations to day-shift operations, consequently one air traffic control console was operational for the morning peak when in normal circumstances six to eight consoles are operating.

"Our technicians are now working to rectify the situation", ASA said.

Dozens of flights were cancelled while many more were experiencing delays of more than two hours, reports the ABC News.

The airline said it would try to get all of its passengers on their way as quickly at it could after the problem was fixed. "We are working hard to clear the backlog of flights", Air Services Australia spokeswoman Sarah Fulton said. "We are working to rectify the issue while managing traffic safely".
