PM Modi reaches China to attend BRICS Summit”

China may think it is "inappropriate" to bring up the issue of Pakistan's terror safe havens at the upcoming BRICS meet, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be "sure" to raise the subject, said a ministry of external affairs (MEA) spokeswoman on Sunday. "I also look forward to productive discussions and positive outcomes that will support the agenda of a stronger BRICS partnership under the chairmanship of China", the prime minister had said ahead of his visit to this Chinese city.

Xi and Modi last met bilaterally during June's Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

There has been substantive progress achieved since South Africa joined Brazil, Russia, India and China to form the bloc in 2011. Xiamen will host the 2017 BRICS Summit from September 3 to 5, which brings together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa.

Saran said, "We also regard BRICS as an important economic platform and a very strong voice for developing countries to come together to push for issues of interest to us, including in terms of the concept of global architecture".

There is also mistrust over China's ally Pakistan, which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi - who also will attend - has labelled a font of terrorism.

He hoped his visit will help in charting a roadmap for closer cooperation between the two countries.

Analysts say that approach demonstrates the openness and inclusiveness of the BRICS mechanism and will create more opportunities for developing nations to cooperate on trade, investment, e-commerce and more areas.

Hua said, "Pakistan is at forefront of counterterror efforts and has made sacrifices for this".

The Chinese official said the decision was taken in order to strengthen further cooperation.

Modi understood China's vulnerability and sensitivity as the host and kept his participation in the Xiamen summit in abeyance until the Doklam deal was hashed out.

From China, the Prime Minister will travel to Myanmar for a state visit from September 5 to 7 at the invitation of Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw.

"I will end my visit in Yangon, where I look forward to visiting various historical spots that symbolise the shared heritage of India and Myanmar".
