Pentagon confirms American ISIS fighter captured in Syriaā€¯

One official said it occurred in northern Syria in an area controlled by a US-backed militia called the Syrian Democratic Forces, according to Fox News.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the American had surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a USA -backed alliance of mostly Arab and Kurdish fighters.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that opposition activists said the convoy of buses was able to reach Deir Ezzour province, an ISIS-held area, after the coalition ended its aerial surveillance and airstrikes on the group. "The Coalition defers questions pertaining to captured ISIS fighters to their relative nations' Departments of State or equivalent agencies", it reads, adding the Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and that ISIS fighters will be pursued regardless of their nationality.

"You can't be very bright if you're going over there and doing that".

The American fighter, whose identity was not released, is not the first American ISIS fighter captured on the battlefield.

Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, spent about 2-1/2 months in early 2016 traveling with Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq and participating in the group's religious training. He was brought to the USA for a trial and convicted in June of providing material support to ISIS. "Any private US citizens/civilians who may have traveled to Iraq or Syria to take part in these activities are neither in support of nor part of USA efforts in the region".

It's not clear if the detainee and the U.S. forces holding him are still in Syria, but the plan is to take the man into Iraq, where he would be then turned over to the U.S. State Department or Justice Department.
