Palestine Just Joined Interpol. Is That Bad for Israel?

Palestine Just Joined Interpol. Is That Bad for Israel?”

Global police agency Interpol has voted to include the "State of Palestine" as a member, in a new boost to Palestinian efforts for worldwide recognition.

Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France.

Palestinians wave their national flag during a rally in Ramallah on November 29, 2012 to support Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas's bid for United Nations recognition of statehood.

He added that the approval reflects the trust of the global community in Palestine's capabilities. Each member country decides how to respond to such a notice and Interpol can't compel its members to arrest a wanted person who is the subject of a red notice.

"Almost every country in the world is a member of Interpol, with the notable exception of North Korea", Min said, including the Arab League, whose members view Israel with hostility.

Israeli Foreign Ministry, which said earlier that Israel's efforts to delay a vote until next year had failed, had no immediate comment on the decision. More than 130 countries recognize Palestine as a state.

Among them are the International Criminal Court and the United Nations heritage body UNESCO.

Palestine would contribute 0.03 percent to Interpol's budget in 2018, the resolution also said.

He said one target would be Mohammed Dahlan, a rival of President Mahmoud Abbas. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing internal Palestinian deliberations.

The Palestinian Authority's admittance to Interpol received the necessary two-thirds majority approval during the body's 86th annual conference in Beijing Wednesday.

The United States believes the unilateral move to have worldwide bodies recognise Palestinian statehood will thwart efforts to restart the peace process.

Interpol members approved the Palestinian Authority membership application by 75 to 24 votes, with 34 abstentions.

A page on the Interpol website listed Palestine as a member since 27 September 2017.

"Such an acceptance sends a clear message to the Israeli government that we are not population centers at its mercy; we believe in a system that is based on the global rule of law and due process, and one which enforces accountability and cooperation at the worldwide level", she added.

The General Assembly discussed the guidelines for membership prior to the vote.
