Pakistan rejects BRICS declaration

Pakistan rejects BRICS declaration”

Pakistan's defence minister Khurram Dastgir was quoted by Geo News as saying at a meeting of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defence: "We reject the declaration [released by member countries] at the BRICS Summit".

Will the BRICS declaration lead to a policy shift in Pakistan?

Officials said the word "TTP" was used in the declaration on the insistence of China to keep the word "Pakistan" out.

The spokesperson said the discussions would cover all aspects of Pakistan-China bilateral relations, as well as regional and worldwide issues of mutual interest.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif will visit China on Friday as the two friendly Countries look to further consolidate their cooperation with regard to development projects especially multi-billion dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations at the BRICS Summit in China and expressed concern over threat posed by terror groups, including those based in Pakistan.

This comes after Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi last month said there has to be a political settlement in Afghanistan and that US President Donald Trump's new war strategy will fail.

"We reaffirm that those responsible for committing, organizing, or supporting terrorist acts must be held accountable", the declaration added.

The BRICS had called for "comprehensive reform" of the United Nations and the UN Security Council "with a view to making it more representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of the developing countries so that it can adequately respond to global challenges".

To the apparent surprise of Islamabad, China came out in support of the BRICS declaration slamming Pakistan-linked terrorist groups.

"It is beyond my understanding how China agreed to this". In the coming days Chinese diplomats have to explain to Pakistan. "Still, it has set a precedent that should give Pakistan cause for worry, at the very least". After Trump denouncement of Pakistan, it is already feeling pressure.

Asif tacitly referred to action by the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force that forced Pakistan to place LeT founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed under house arrest. Some Chinese nationals have lost their lives inside Pakistan at the hands of Islamic terrorists.

Washington and Kabul have long accused Islamabad of turning a blind eye to the issue of safe havens for Afghan militant groups.
