Myanmar military says death toll in clashes nearly 400”

"Rohingya villages are being razed in Rakhine state as the Myanmar government steps up nationalist rhetoric", writes Al Jazeera, which says the Burmese military is "systematically going from village to village, looting and destroying everything".

On Sunday, a statement from the country's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said the death toll from violence that began Thursday night had reached 96, The Associated Press reported.

A Rohingya man passes a child though a barbed wire border fence on the border with Bangladesh. Thousands of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and other local ethnic groups have also been displaced. Violence erupted in Rakhine, Myanmar on August 25 when the southeast Asian country's security forces launched an operation against the Rohingya Muslim community.

Sham Shu Hoque, 34, crossed the border with 17 family members.

The Rohingya are quite simply one of the most helpless and forsaken peoples of the world.

In Burma- a fractious, underdeveloped, multiethnic country that is home to numerous insurgencies - the Rohingya occupy a special status of neglect and abuse.

"Many children have been killed", he told BuzzFeed News from Geneva, "many women, many elderly".

Uddin said 412 Hindus are staying in a Hindu neighborhood near Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.

Bangladesh is under intense worldwide pressure to allow the fleeing Rohingya to cross into its territory, but it has pushed a number of them back, in what rights groups say is a contravention of its global obligations.

Over 400,000 Rohingya refugees are already living in overcrowded, squalid camps and makeshift settlements in Bangladesh's southern district of Cox's Bazar.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees called on Bangladesh to open its borders to the Rohingyas to enable a humanitarian corridor.

United Nations sources also said on Friday that some 38,000 Rohingyas had managed to cross into neighboring Bangladesh.

Hundreds of people have been stranded in a no man's land at the countries' border, the International Organization for Migration said.

"We are working with the Bangladeshi authorities and our partners to provide life-saving assistance, including temporary shelter, food and medical treatment for those who need it", Tan said.

Numerous new arrivals were women and children, including heavily pregnant women, she said.

It has also sought a direction that Rohingyas be provided "basic amenities to ensure that they can live in human conditions as required by global law".

The Rohingya are denied citizenship in Buddhist-majority Myanmar and regarded as illegal immigrants, despite claiming roots that date back centuries. They are often subjected to violence.

HRW reports that widespread arson attacks in Rakhine appear to resemble the scale of previous state violence campaigns in 2012 and 2016.
