Lewis' windfall spells good fortune for Harvey victims

Lewis' windfall spells good fortune for Harvey victims”

"I will be playing this week at the Portland Classic and will donate 100 percent of my earnings to Houston and the victims of Hurricane Harvey", Lewis said in her note.

Stacy Lewis shot an 8-under 64 on Friday for a share of the lead with two-time defending champion Brooke Henderson and first-round leader In Gee Chun at 10-under 134 at tree-lined Columbia Edgewater.

Lewis ended a long winless streak Sunday at Cambia Portland Classic, with her $195,000 in winnings going to the relief efforts in her hometown area.

What Lewis did not know as she walked down the 18th hole with a one-shot lead was that her sponsor KPMG was going to match whatever amount she won. A trio of golfers are just two shots back heading into the weekend including Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Ai Miyazato - who is playing in her final LPGA Tour event on United States soil prior to retiring, and Moriya Jutanugarn.

Prior to the tournament she signalled her intentions via twitter, and was nearly overcome with emotion as she came to terms with what she'd accomplished. That's more important than anything. Chun missed a short birdie putt at the par-4 14th, and pulled to within a stroke with a 45-foot birdie at the par-3 16th. "It was a really tough shot and to see it go in just made me really happy and it changed my day".

Finishing second in tournaments, "sometimes it's your fault, sometimes it's not", she said. "I want to enjoy it and play like I always do", Miyazato said.

"It would honestly probably be one of the most special", Lewis said about the possibility of adding to her 11 LPGA Tour wins. "You can't just get up there and bomb it", Lewis said. She also broke through in Portland after finishing second twice - two strokes behind Suzann Pettersen in 2013 and four shots behind Brooke Henderson past year. She closed with a 3-under 69 to hold off In Gee Chun by a stroke at tree-lined Columbia Edgewater.

"I knew I could win, but it's always hard".

Henderson played a five-hole stretch in 5 under in a 67, and Chun had a 68. She parred every hole on the back nine.

The LPGA Tour now moves to Indianapolis for the Indy Women in Tech Championship ahead of the Evian Championship in France the following week. Lewis' second-place finish earned her $120,962 according to the LPGA.

Lewis has come close to victory any number of times since that 2014 win in Arkansas, achingly close 12 times, to be precise.
