Kvitova ousts Wimbledon champion Muguruza

Kvitova ousts Wimbledon champion Muguruza”

The 27-year-old put forth a breathtaking display of power tennis, rebounding from an early deficit to storm past No.3-seeded Garbiñe Muguruza, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to reach her 10th career Grand Slam quarterfinal and second in NY.

Third-seeded Muguruza needed only 62 minutes to dispatch Slovakian 31st seed Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 6-1 to continue her best US Open run and take command of the fight for women's world number one.

The 2016 French Open victor has made an effort to adapt on all surfaces this season, which has been key to her rise to number three in the world rankings.

"Ultimately, I can take a lot from this week", she continued.

Venus Williams will have to win a third set to return to the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the second time in three years.

Unexpectedly, it was a destructive run of four straight games by Kvitova as she claimed 16 of the 19 points in the process and came up with some incredible shots which left Muguruza helpless.

"She played unbelievable throughout the first and second set and I just kept fighting, running for every ball", Sevastova said.

"It will be a great match for me to step on Arthur Ashe Stadium again-probably-and play there", said Kvitova about her quarterfinal with the 37 year-old. The 13th-seeded Czech lefthander ousted Spanish third seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (7/3) 6-3 to book a Tuesday last-eight date with U.S. ninth seed and seven-time Grand Slam victor Venus Williams.

After sustaining wounds to the fingers of her racket-playing left hand last December, which left her doubting whether she would ever play again, Kvitova's comeback has exceeded all expectations. It was truly an awesome performance from the Czech, who storms to the quarterfinals for a clash with Venus Williams.

On Sunday she hit nine double faults yet her first serve on average was 14kmh faster than the Spaniard's.

Venus Williams is one win away from reaching her first US Open semifinal in seven years. The Czech is on the comeback trail after her left playing hand was slashed by an intruder - an injury that threatened to end her career.

Earlier Sunday, 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov's entertaining stay ended with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) loss to 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. As she said once: "Respecting my opponent has always been important to me because without an opponent we can't play this lovely game".

Most sport has become methodical and played according to a very particular grammar, but Kvitova's tennis still retains an originality.

"I suspect that's why Nike suspended their relationship, but did not drop her".

Stephens has won 12 of her last 14 matches.
