Iran's Rohani Vows Stronger Missile Capabilities

"The missile Khoramshahr (...) can wear different conventional heads for hitting several targets at once", said general Amir Ali Hadjizadeh, commander of the aerospace force of the revolutionary Guards, quoted Friday by Irna, the official agency of information of the islamic Republic of Iran.

That range is enough to strike major cities in Iran's regional rivals, such as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in Israel and Medina and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, as well as the numerous U.S. military bases in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Israel, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

UN inspectors say Iran has fulfilled its commitments to give up its nuclear activities under the agreement, which was reached with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.

Tehran says the tests are exclusively for defensive purposes and notes that the nuclear accord does cover its missile program.

Iran flaunted its new ballistic weapons today as President Hassan Rouhani vowed to boost the country's missile capabilities without seeking the permission of any other nation.

The test comes at the end of a heated week of diplomacy at the UN General Assembly, where both the United States and Israel denounced Iran and its nuclear deal with six world powers.

"Like North Korea, Iran is responding to Trump's bellicosity by its own display of strength, to show it is not cowed", said Mark Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Americas office of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a British think tank.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr, with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) was displayed in public.

The unveiling of the missile came during a military parade that commemorated the 1980s Iraq-Iran war.

"We will increase our military strength", he said. Rouhani had rejected a US -led effort to alter the Iranian 2015 nuclear agreement at the United Nations General Assembly in NY on Wednesday.

Mr Trump has been critical of the 2015 nuclear deal the U.S. and other world powers struck with Iran.

Iran denies its missile development breaches the resolution and says its missiles are not created to carry nuclear weapons.

He said Tehran was bringing stability to the region.
