IMD withdraws heavy rainfall warning in Mumbai”

Torrential rains lashed India's financial capital Mumbai on Tuesday, flooding low-lying areas and disrupting transport.

Mumbai International Airport, India's second busiest airport, has flown around four flights to other airports and shut down operations for about half an hour after rain reduced visibility, a spokeswoman said.

Met officials have predicted heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours.

The state of Maharashtra's Education Minister Vinod Tawde in a tweet advised all schools and colleges in the city to remain closed on Wednesday, when the weather department forecasting that heavy rains would continue.

Meanwhile Mumbai City Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, the Fire Brigade and the Navy have been asked to be on standby for the next few days, the English newspaper reported.

And till date, the city of dreams has recorded 538.4 mm of rains which is nearly double the average rainfall for the month of September.

The skidding of a SpiceJet aircraft on the main runway last night compounded the problem further as it forced the private airport operator to shift operations to the secondary runway, which can carry out limited operations.

Last month a bout of heavy rainfall in the city also led to the cancellation and delay of flights right up till the next day. It was reported that 56 flights were diverted as the operation at Mumbai International Airport remain suspended until today morning.

Several domestic airlines made a decision to waive off airfare penalties for passengers travelling to or from Mumbai for a defined period period after the main runway was closed.

Several parts of the city, including South Mumbai, Borivali, Kandivili, Andheri and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall. Latest reports suggest that traffic is moving slow on the Santacruz Chembur Link Road.

Mumbai recorded its second highest September rain in a span of 12 hours on Tuesday, BMC officials said.

Traffic movement has eased in most areas as the waterlogging has reduced significantly.

The suburban train services of the Central Railway, the Western Railway and on the Harbour corridor trains were running late by 5 to 10 minutes.
