Here's what we know about Mexico's natural disaster”

People in Mexico City ran out into the streets in pyjamas and alarms sounded after the quake struck just before midnight, a Reuters witness said.

The quake triggered tsunami waves as high as 3.3 feet at the port of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca, according to the U.S. National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said the natural disaster is the biggest the country has seen in a century, adding that it resulted in major damage and left one million without power. "The country's seismologic service initially gave a magnitude of 8.4, which if confirmed would be the most powerful ever recorded in this quake-prone country", the Telegraph quoted Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, as saying.

Authorities said the other three deaths were in Chiapas state, in San Cristobal de las Casas, the AP reported.

Such earthquakes can come with a list of aftereffects, including tsunamis and landslides, according to the USGS, which reported aftershocks registering above magnitude 5.

Waves as high as 9.8 feet above tide level were possible along some of Mexico's coast.

Pena Nieto said that his country had just experienced the largest quake in 100 years.

Two people were crushed to death in Chiapas when buildings collapsed on them, said local officials and Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong.

Puente said those three southern Pacific states near the epicenter were the most affected by the quake. Buildings were immediately shaken by this quake.

It was felt in distant Mexico City, causing people to flee swaying buildings and knocking out lights to part of the capital. One was crushed by a collapsing wall, while the other - an infant on a respirator - died after the quake triggered a power outage in the hospital.

The current Foreign Office travel advice says: "Most of Mexico is occasionally subject to earthquakes".
