After nationwide protests and outrage over the brutal murder of activist and senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, 55, on Tuesday by unidentified assailants, the Karnataka Government has made a decision to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the crime.

Gadkari sought to put the onus of maintaining law and order on the Congress government in Karnataka.

"We strongly believe that such silencing methods are an attempt of divisive forces in a democratic system to stifle the media", the memorandum said.

Following the murder of Gauri near her residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday, several journalists, thinkers and activists expresses outraged at the killing of the 55 year old journalist.

He said the Prime Minister could not react on everything.

According to witnesses, three bullets were fired at Lankesh's forehead, killing her instantaneously. Protests and candlelit vigils were held in her memory across the country.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pays last tribute to journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Police said they were searching for leads, but that it was too early to say who killed her.

Salil Neog, president of AJYCP Margherita Regional Committee, Ramanus Lakra, general secretary of AASAA Tinsukia District Committee and Sibu Talukdar, secretary general of Federation of Barua Buddhist Welfare Association of Assam, also condemned and criticized the Modi government under whose rule the Hindutva forces were allegedly killing intellectuals. The Karnataka government has set up a Special Investigation Team to track down the killers, even as the family of the slain journalist have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.
