Four US tourists attacked with acid in France

Four US tourists attacked with acid in France”

Four young female US tourists were attacked with acid in Marseille's main train station, an official said. Authorities said two French nationals were arrested in Marseille before they were able to carry out what Paris prosecutor Francois Molins called an "imminent, violent action".

The alleged attacker has been arrested by police, but is yet to be named.

French authorities are not investigating the acid attack as an act of terrorism for the time being.

Two of the tourists, who were traveling between Marseille and Paris, were hit in the face and the other two also were hospitalized with shock. The prosecutor's office in the capital, which has responsibility for all terror-related cases in France, did not explain the reasoning behind the decision.

The suspect has "a psychiatric history", a spokeswoman for the police prefecture in Marseille said.

La Provence, a newspaper in Marseille, reported that police described the woman as mentally unstable and that she remained at the scene to show officers pictures of herself with burns.

In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver deliberately rammed into two bus stops last month, killing a woman, but officials said it wasn't terror-related.

It took place on Sunday morning at Saint-Charles train station in the port city in southern France.
