Eye of Hurricane Irma hits mainland US

Eye of Hurricane Irma hits mainland US”

Images out of Polk County, Florida shows the devastation occurring as first responders attempted to go out into the storm.

Irma was at one time the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, with a peak wind speed of 185mph last week. This is the longest any cyclone has maintained that intensity on record, according to Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric scientist at Colorado State University.

Buckhorn said areas along the Tampa Bay shoreline could expect a unsafe storm surge anywhere from 3 to 8 feet, adding that it would depend on where Irma went. Irma made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning at Cudjoe Key, not far from Key West.

FPL said it expects to restore essentially all of its customers in the eastern portion of the state by the weekend and the harder-hit western portion Florida by September 22.

"This morning we had a couple people that were moving sand bags to their homes", Frus said.

Exceedingly menacing Hurricane Irma first hit into Florida Keys and then made a second landfall on Marco Island Florida's west coast unbridled brutal wind squall up to 142 miles per hour and outburst of flooding.

In Irma's case, traveling along the west coast, southeast Florida gets the storm's "strong side", DeMaria said.

Irma wreaked havoc over almost the entire Florida peninsula from the southernmost Keys to the Georgia line, from the Atlantic to the Gulf coasts. Petersburg area were braced for its first direct hit from a major hurricane since 1921.

The historic storm is so wide that authorities faced destructive storm surges on both coasts of Florida and the Keys as it follows a path north toward Georgia.

The National Weather Service in Atlanta issued a tropical storm watch for the area Monday and Tuesday.

Almost 7.2 million homes and businesses are without power in multiple states as Tropical Storm Irma moves through the Southeast.

"[A deputy] told me everyone could be in this building for days", he said.

The south to north scenario along a coastline that Irma seems to be taking has always been seen as the most problematic for Floridians because of the few places it leaves for residents to flee from the storm.

Overnight, Irma was downgraded to a category 2 storm, but continued to wreak havoc along the west coast. We've got roads that are impassible still across the state.

FPL says this is the biggest outage in the company's history, so it could take weeks. Storm surge, debris and downed power lines still present a danger to large swaths of South Florida and the Gulf Coast. "Stay safe, be prepared, listen to local evacuation advisories". Home flooded by surge, vehicle trapped under a auto, but still they managed to have a positive perspective after Hurricane Irma. But by Sunday, just before the season's halfway point, there had already been 11 named storms and six hurricanes.
