Air Berlin scraps more flights as pilots call in sick”

Verdi board member Christine Behle said: "All the conversations surrounding insolvent Air Berlin are always about its economic interests, never about the jobs of its more than 8,000 employees".

It seems like sickness is in the air since their cancelled flights aren't.

Insolvent Air Berlin said it has cancelled around 70 flights so far on Tuesday, affecting both its own operations and flights it carries out for Lufthansa's Eurowings, after pilots called in sick in unusually high numbers.

The company's website reveals canceled flights from several German airports including Berlin Tegel, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, and Cologne.

The objective of the loan is to allow Air Berlin to continue operations and maintain its services while it concludes ongoing negotiations to sell its assets.

Parties interested in buying its assets have until Friday to submit binding offers.

The carrier said Monday it will cancel numerous routes to the Caribbean and some U.S. flights from September 25, and only customers who bought tickets after the company filed for insolvency on August 15 will be reimbursed. At the end of the process, Air Berlin is expected to cease operating and exit the market.

Some 149 pilots and first officers had already called in sick for Wednesday, Air Berlin boss Thomas Winkelmann said, according an internal memo.

Germany's biggest airline, Lufthansa, is seen in pole position to acquire large parts of its rival and a decision on the bids come could as early as September 21, three days before a national election.

Air Berlin has accused the absent pilots of "threatening the existence" of the airline, warning that the turmoil could scare off investors.

The financial support given by the German Government will keep Air Berlin flying for 90 days.

Later, Irish low-priced airline Ryanair accused Lufthansa and the German government of conspiracy to carve up the assets of the collapsed airline.
