Why Amazon Should Sweat Google's Wal-Mart Deal

Why Amazon Should Sweat Google's Wal-Mart Deal”

"To take advantage of this personalization, customers only need to link their Walmart account to Google Express". Walmart's head of e-commerce, Marc Lore, said the feature is already receiving good traffic as the company is witnessing "nice repeat" business from the "Easy reorder" service. Walmart's partnership with Google will serve as a high-profile example of what digital assistants can offer to the retail industry. Because of Google's technology, Lore said it just made sense to team up with the tech giant.

While that continues to be speculative, what is nearly certain is that voice shopping is here big time, and artificial intelligence too will have a big role to play in that.

"Wal-Mart said it will share consumers' purchase history with Google to enable users to quickly reorder items, a primary function of voice-controlled orders for commodity shopping".

The collaboration is Wal-Mart's latest attempt to match the convenience of Amazon, which quickly delivers a bigger online selection and has a dominant line of voice-activated Echo speakers that play music, turn on air conditioners and handle shopping orders.

In addition, Ramaswamy announced that Google was looking to offer both "free and fast delivery" with the Express Service.

All of this points to Google making moves to ramp up integration of its Google Assistant AI with big shopping chains, taking aim at Amazon's own AI-based shopping service.

For Alphabet Inc.'s Google, the partnership is a boost for its Express shopping app and website, which have also struggled to compete with Amazon.

Walmart (NYSE:WMT) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) have formed an agreement to enter the voice-shopping market, which is now dominated by online retail rival Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Existing Walmart customers will simply have to link their Walmart account to Google to receive personalized shopping results based on previous online and in-store Walmart purchases. Or you went to the store only to realize they didn't have the brand you wanted?

Walmart - which last year had $486 billion in revenue, more than three times Amazon.com's $136 billion - has spent the past year aggressively expanding its online reach. Walmart already maintains an e-commerce presence and even recently free 2-day shipping on qualifying items without a membership fee, so long as the total purchase is $35 or more.

According to Bloomberg, Wal-Mart Stores has applied for a patent for a blimp-styled "floating warehouse" drone that could make deliveries directly to shoppers' homes.
