Warning to anyone who's used CeX as two million customer details leak

Warning to anyone who's used CeX as two million customer details leak”

CEX, the United Kingdom second-hand games retailer, has sent out an email to its customers warning them that it has suffered an online security breach, through which more than 2 million customer details may have been compromised.

It's that time again when we reset the imaginary internet sign to read "0 days without a United Kingdom data breach".

The retailer is now working with the police and other relevant authorities to find out who conducted the cyber-attack and exactly how much data was stolen. There is also a select number of stores in the US.

Up to two million online customers of CeX at at risk from attackers - but no information of in-store customers has been compromised.

The firm is also recommending that affected customers change their passwords if they reused it across multiple accounts and services.

CEX stopped storing customers credit card information in 2009, but the hackers may have obtained names, addresses, emails and phone numbers.

This is on top of what CeX stresses was always a robust security system, which it says was continually updated.

"It's surprising that Cex still stored customer card details prior to 2009", said Javvad Malik from security firm AlienVault.

In addition to storing payment data, these businesses often collect information about their customers via loyalty programs, store credit cards, and other collection methods.

It says to change your password for its webuy.com site, and any other sites where you use the same password. The company does admit that this wasn't enough, stating: 'Clearly however, additional measures were required to prevent such a sophisticated breach occurring'. "Together we have implemented additional advanced measures of security to prevent this from happening again".

"One would struggle to think of a legitimate business reason for storing expired card details".
