Stabber identified in central Russian city attackā€

Islamic State on Saturday claimed responsibility after a man stabbed seven people on the street in a Russian city before being shot dead by police, despite investigators saying it was probably not a terrorist attack.

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed the responsibility for the knife attack in Surgut city of Russian Federation which 8 people were injured.

The Islamic State militant group (IS) said on its official news channel that it was behind the attack.

No motive has been established yet.

Russia's Investigative Committee's representative Svetlana Petrenko said that the investigation expects further information on the accused, including regarding possible mental disorders.

Footage on social YouTube shows a police officer standing over what appears to be the body of the suspect lying on a path in a park.

"The committee is investigating attempted murder", its spokeswoman told Reuters by phone. A local news site, K-Inform, initially reported that three men in masks had attacked pedestrians with knives, an ax and firearms. It said one woman was stabbed while standing at an ATM.

Fears have surfaced that other weapons were used in the attack, including an axe and stones.

The incident took place in a city some 2,100 kilometers northeast of Moscow in the oil-rich Khanty-Mansi region.

Unconfirmed media reports on Saturday had described the attacker as a 19-year-old whose father originates from Dagestan in Russia's mainly-Muslim North Caucasus region.
