Samsung is creating a smart speaker after all

Samsung is creating a smart speaker after all”

This news follows just over a month after multiple rumors claimed Samsung was working on a smart speaker powered by Samsung's digital assistant, Bixby, under the codename 'Vega'.

Bixby was introduced with the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus earlier this year but without voice recognition.

Bixby hits the market well after Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa, and Google's Assistant. "In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices".

Originally set to roll out in the USA and South Korea in the spring with the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus flagship phones, Bixby's arrival was delayed until July.

Samsung is creating a smart speaker after all

Confirmation of a smart speaker by Samsung follows months of speculation on the matter, beginning in May when Samsung filed a design patent with the US government for an audio device with a visual display.

Samsung would be joining a crowded field of voice-activated, stationary speakers, which can be used in a kitchen or living room to play music, order a pizza, dim the lights or even tell a knock-knock joke, all without having to look at a screen or use your hands. However, this is the first time when Samsung has outrightly confirmed the existence of such device and also confirmed its arrival. Bixby's deep integration is also built into the smartphone settings so that you can change phone options- such as setting the screen timeout or showing all notifications- without interrupting what you are now doing.

Of course, Koh didn't provide any real details about the device, but he did seem pretty confident in it, saying that he has already "started on it" and that Samsung envisions a "a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices". Apple is also going to enter the arena soon with its HomePod.
