Rohingya try to enter Bangladesh to flee Myanmar violence

Rohingya try to enter Bangladesh to flee Myanmar violence”

Myanmar says the group is headed by Rohingya jihadists who were trained overseas but it is unclear how large the network is and they appear to be using homespun weapons in addition to guns seized during their raids.

Aid workers expect thousands of Rohingya families fearful of getting caught-up in the latest violence to try to reach Bangladesh in the coming days.

But troopers from Border Guard Bangladesh keep an eye to prevent them from crossing into Bangladesh territory.

Mohammed Shafi, who lives in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, said his cousin in Myanmar had told him of the trouble.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar are trying to cross the border with Bangladesh, Bangladeshi security officials said on Saturday, as fresh fighting erupted in Myanmar's northwestern Rakhine state.

Some 30 police posts came under attack in the early hours of Friday by an estimated 150 insurgents, some carrying guns and using homemade explosives, Myanmar's military said.

"Bodies of terrorists retrieved 59", the statement published on Facebook said.

One resident in Maungdaw, the main town in northern Rakhine, said gunfire could be heard throughout the night. "We can't go until the mines are cleared".

"Fighting is ongoing at police posts in Kyar Gaung Taung and Nat Chaung villages". About 10 percent of the world's stateless people live in Myanmar and Rohingyas make up the single largest stateless community in the world.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army which also calls itself Harakah al Yaqin claimed responsibility for the attacks that have reinforced fears that Islamic militants have opened a new battlefront in Asia.

"As Myanmar refuses to acknowledge Rohingya Muslims as citizens, it becomes impossible for the Indian government to deport them there, making the advisory infructuous", Dhanuka said.

Earlier in the day, groups of militants carried out a series of simultaneous attacks against Myanmar police in the western state of Rakhine.

About 2,000 Rohingya women and children gathered at the "zero line" border today but were denied entry.

The attacks took place one day after an advisory commission led by the former United Nations chief Kofi Annan finished its year-long mandate to advise State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's government on long-term solutions for the ethnically and religiously divided Rakhine State.

"25 Aug attack in N Rakine utmost concern!"

Guterres termed the attacks as "unacceptable" and reiterated the "importance of addressing the root causes of violence, in particular issues related to identity and citizenship, and reducing inter-communal tensions", his spokesperson said.

The UN has condemned the attack and called for "all parties to refrain from violence, protect civilians and restore order".

In October 2016, a Rohingya group was accused of killing nine policemen in Myanmar.

The UN believes that military crackdown may have amounted to ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya.

Many were left without shelter in a no man's land on the border, or were forced to return to their villages, putting them in the crossfire between militants and security forces. According to the Rohingyas and some scholars, they are indigenous to Rakhine State, while other historians claim that the group represents a mixture of precolonial and colonial immigrations.

Activists and supporters on both sides of the sectarian divide have a history of posting false images and footage online.
