President grieved over demise of Dr. Ruth Pfau”

Lauding the unforgettable services of late Dr Pfau for the elimination of leprosy from Pakistan, he said she left her country and made Pakistan her homeland just to serve the humanity.

Ruth Pfau came to Pakistan in 1960s and dedicated her life to taking care of leprosy patients.

Dr Pfau, who led a battle against the stigmatised disease of leprosy, passed away early Thursday morning after a long illness.

She has been running a leprosy centre and was in charge of Mary Adelaide Society of Pakistan, where leprosy patients are treated.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Dr. Pfau "may have been born in Germany, but her heart was always in Pakistan", the BBC reported. In the following couple of years, the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center opened more branches in every other area of the nation, additionally in Gilgit-Baltistan. The nun persuaded the Pakistani government five years later to start a programme against leprosy across the country. She became known as the Mother Theresa of Pakistan, a reference to Mother Theresa of India, the nun and missionary who became a saint in the Roman Catholic Church.
