Perseid meteor shower to peak this Friday night & early Saturday morning

Perseid meteor shower to peak this Friday night & early Saturday morning”

The upcoming Total Solar Eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower are set to occur this month.

"The increased number will be cancelled out by the bright Moon, the light of which will wash out the fainter Perseids", according to a NASA blog post. However, one thing is for sure: the 2017 Perseid meteor shower will not bring any of them closer to that dream. The moon will be waning and will still be about 80% of the brightness of the full moon. He added that the rate of the meteor shower in areas free of light pollution is expected to be 100 [meteors] per hour.

The meteors we'll see this weekend are the result of Earth's passage through debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet.

On this night, the moon will be around three-quarters full, making it trickier to spot the shower in the sky.

The shower may be slightly better in the predawn hours of August 12, but there will be a decent showing both nights.

He said the best time to watch the shower is around 2 or 3 in the morning, but you have to watch closely.

"Rates will be about half what they would be normally, because of the bright moonlight", Cooke told Space.com.

A meteor shower called the Perseids will peak this weekend.

A treat in the sky awaits tonight as the best meteor shower show of the year returns.

Cox recommends finding a dark spot outside, away from street or house lights, and allowing your eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust. Did you know that each Perseid meteor travels at 132,000 miles per hour?!

At best, a typical Perseid meteor shower produces 80 to a few hundred meteors per hour.

The Perseids are so named because the meteors appear to emanate from the constellation Perseus, the Medusa-killing hero of Greek mythology. "These meteors tend to be very long and long-lasting so it is definitely worth trying to see some of them", the IMO said, according to Newsweek. The comets travel at extreme speeds of around 132,000 miles per hour (59 kilometers per second), which is around 500 times faster than the world's fastest vehicle is capable of travelling. Dr Meghan Gray, a researcher at University of Nottingham, said, "These meteor showers happen every year in August". There are other comet debris trails throughout the year that give us other meteor showers, such as the Leonids in November.
