Losing an election not easy; Mahama to Kenyans

Losing an election not easy; Mahama to Kenyans”

Observers see the election as the last showdown of a dynastic rivalry between the families of Kenyatta, 55, and Odinga that has lasted more than half a century.

Losing an election can be "very frustrating" because it prevents one from achieving a set goal, former president John Dramani Mahama has said.

Former President Thabo Mbeki has given his seal of approval to the Kenyan presidential election.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was named the victor of Kenya's general election, the country's electoral commission (IEBC) announced on Friday.

After the mysterious murder and torture of a high-ranking elections official late last month, Odinga claimed that - in Eyder's words - "a hacker used that man's credentials to go into the electoral reporting system and changed the result". Most of the country has remained calm.

"We are willing to lose our lives", said Steve Omindo, another protester, suggesting that the demonstrations would continue, even as police trucks could be seen in the distance. "I therefore wish to declare Uhuru Kenyatta.as President-elect", said Mr Chebukati.

We sampled reactions from various people concerning the ongoing situation in Kenya.

"People are not happy", said opposition supporter Oyoo Ogango, 30, who is unemployed with three children.

Two people were shot dead in Nairobi as they took advantage of the protests to loot, Nairobi police chief Japheth Koome said.

"What the IEBC has posted as results of the Presidential Elections is a complete fraud based on a multiplier that fraudulently gave Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast", he said in a series of tweets.

Kenya's capital has a heavy police presence as residents await an announcement of the results of Tuesday's already disputed presidential election.

With about 95% of the vote counted, the incumbent president has opened up a lead of 1.4 million votes, according to the count recorded on the commission website.

Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the voting authority, confirmed Thursday that there had been an unsuccessful attempt to tamper with its election system.

Kenya's government is urging citizens to return to work as they wait for results from the presidential election.

Television and radio presenters are echoing messages from the Interior Ministry saying the country is safe despite pockets of protests. Businesses have been closed in Nairobi's central business district since Tuesday's vote.

Opposition candidate Raila Odinga has claimed that the electoral commission database was hacked and results manipulated in favor of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Odinga, a polarising figure who is adored by his supporters, also ran and lost in 2013, and took his complaints about the widespread failure of electronic voting equipment to court.

The election is a test of democracy in the East African economic power.

Over 400 global election observers - including officials from the United States and the European Union - were deployed across the country to monitor voting, the tallying process and part of the post-election period.
