Indonesia angered after Malaysia shows its flag as Poland's”

The mistake, spotted at the games' opening in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday, sparked an outcry in Indonesia and the hashtag #ShameonyouMalaysia was trending on social media.

Mr Widodo said the incident "concerns the national pride of our country", but added: "We deeply regret the incident but do not exaggerate it".

Malaysia apologised to Indonesia on Sunday for an "unintentional" mistake in printing the Indonesian flag upside down in a souvenir guidebook for the South-East Asian Games.

Indonesia's flag has a red stripe above a white stripe, but it was printed with the white stripe on top - which made it look like the flag of Poland.

In the statement, Aman emphasized that "all measures have been taken to address this unfortunate situation" and reassured that "Malaysia places importance to its close and deeply rooted fraternal relations with Indonesia".

It said Khairy, who is also Masoc chairman, called on Imam Nahrawi yesterday to extend a personal apology on behalf of the committee.

Nahrawi, who earlier described the error as "very painful", said he accepted the apology. "This [incident] will never change our bonds and brotherhood", Imam told journalists after meeting his Malaysian counterpart, Brig.

"We would like to extend our apology to the government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia", a foreign ministry statement said.

PSI deputy president H. Syafrizal Bakhtiar said the decision by the coach and the players to walk out in protest against the match referee's decision was taken in the heat of the moment as emotion had taken over any rationale thinking.

Posting an image of the booklet containing the error, the hackers left a message with the words "Bendera Negaraku Bukanlah Mainan" ("My national flag is not a plaything"), embedding an Indonesian patriotic anthem in the background.

A year ago at the Rio Olympics, China complained that the flag used at medal ceremonies had its small gold stars pointing at the wrong angle.
