Harvey may force Rangers-Astros series to neutral site

The three-game series is scheduled to get underway on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park where Houston is dealing with waist-high floodwaters in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. But when the Astros' president, Reid Ryan, approached the Rangers with the idea of trading home series - the two squads are scheduled to play another series starting on September 25 - he was rebuffed.

The Astros' series against the Texas Rangers will take place at the home of the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday through Thursday.

As well, the Rangers announced that they will donate the proceeds from their Texas 2 Split 50/50 Raffle to the American Red Cross from all three games of the upcoming home series with the Angels that starts September 1. As Rosenthal also pointed out, moving both the Texas and NY series would turn a short three-game road trip to Anaheim (where Houston played this past weekend) into a 19-game road trip. Instead, they wanted to play all six games in Arlington.

When joining the Ben and Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan later Monday, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels didn't dispute what Ryan said, but talked about his club's reasons for not wanting to flip series with Houston. They have teamed up with Crane Worldwide to get needed supplies to Houston.

Because of this, the Astros had to relocate to Tampa bay for the "players' best interest" and "integrity of the schedule".

The Rangers were expected to conclude their current road trip in Houston against the Astros this week. The proceeds will be used for relief for the victims in the Houston and South Texas area devastated from Hurricane Harvey.

The Astros offered flipping this week's home series for their scheduled visit to Arlington on September 25-27, but the Rangers declined. This is all the revenue - from ticket sales all the way down to parking.

Having run away with the American League West, the Astros are playing for home-field advantage in the first two rounds of the postseason.

Even in a time of crisis during Hurricane Harvey, the Texas Rangers appear to be unwilling to help out a division rival. The Astros were already in North Texas after flying there rather than Houston on Sunday. The Rangers are very much in the mix for a wild card berth, and they might see that kind of adjustment as being not in their competitive interests.

Sources said moving the series to Citi Field, with the Astros officially designated as the home team, had been a possibility early in deliberations, but as talks continued, that option became increasingly unlikely.
