Family Members Found Dead In Van After Harvey Floodwaters Recedeā€

Family members told a Texas news station that six of their family members drowned Sunday afternoon as they tried to escape from floodwaters brought about by Hurricane Harvey.

Police officers called to the scene on Sunday were unable to help the other family members as the van was already submerged in at least four feet of water, said Gonzalez, adding that the area between the front and back of the van was blocked by a metal mesh typical of work vans. Samuel heard the children scream as the van was rapidly swept away, Ric told KTRK-TV.

Virginia Saldivar, who identified herself as the driver's sister-in-law and the children's grandmother, said the kids and their great-grandparents weren't able to escape in time.

"He just seen the van go under the water". By the time he got to dry land, the vehicle had disappeared, he said. As thousands of others around the Houston area similarly sought refuge from the unrelenting wrath of Harvey, he drove over a waterlogged bridge heading over Greens Bayou in eastern Houston, encouraged by his father to do so in spite of the apparent danger of the waters. Sammy lost control and the van went nose-first into the bayou with the family trapped inside. Sammy stopped at another relative's home to pick up Devy, 16, Dominic, 14, Xavier, 8, and 6-year-old Daisy. Three family members confirmed the story to KHOU 11 News, even as many of them are just learning of the news.

"I can already imagine Dad holding Mom's hand real tight as the water rushed in", Ric told CNN.

The grieving family and authorities are now waiting for the storm to pass to go search for the bodies but Ric said his brother is not doing well after the ordeal.

"He's still blaming himself, he was trying to do the right thing to get them out of the flood. and it just happened".
