Consumer Reports pulls Microsoft Surface recommendation due to reliability issues

Consumer Reports pulls Microsoft Surface recommendation due to reliability issues”

Consumer Reports has removed its "recommended" status for the 128GB and 256GB versions of the Surface Laptop and the 128GB and 512GB versions of the Surface Book. The news is headlined by a two-year problem report rate of 25%, suggesting that a quarter of all Surface owners will experience problems with their devices by their second year of ownership.

Microsoft's Surface line of mobile devices has a lot of fans, including our own Bruno "morphine" Ferreira. According to CR, this is the first time Surface products have been popular enough for the company to gather data from its readers on their long-term reliability and service requirements.

We are still waiting for Microsoft to release their next smartphone and although Microsoft has not announced anything yet, most people do believe that they are working on a one and that the new smartphone will be carrying the Surface name.

"If you are very concerned about how long your products are going to last, it might be better for you to go with a brand that has a higher predicted reliability", Jerry Beilinson, electronics editor at the consumer goods testing publication, said in an interview. The differences were "statistically significant", we're told, which is why Microsoft lost the "recommended" designation.

A number of survey respondents said they experienced problems with their devices during startup.

What's hugely important to point out here is that Consumer Reports' retraction of its recommendation appears entirely dependent upon subscriber survey answers.

Microsoft disputed the study, saying the company's return and support rates differ significantly from the Consumer Reports study.

Are you looking for a little more rugged edge to your shiny new Surface Laptop? Within the Surface product family, Microsoft also sells the Surface Laptop, which features a traditional clamshell laptop design.

In earlier lab tests that measure factors such as display quality, battery life, speed and ergonomics, Surface devices were ranked highly by Consumer Reports. A few commented that their machines froze or shut down unexpectedly, while several others told us the touch screens weren't responsive enough.
