Aegis Combat System Fires Two Standard Missile-6 Against Ballistic Missile Target

Monday's test missile was launched from Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai in Hawaii.

The missile defense agency director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves said the test was a "key milestone" in enhancing the country's ballistic defense technologies, CNN noted.

The missile defence drill was conducted from the Arleigh Burke-class USS John Paul Jones, state the statement issue by US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) on Wednesday. Sailors aboard the destroyer USS John Paul Jones tracked it with radar and fired an interceptor missile to shoot it down.

The latest in a series of missile tests came as South Korea and the US conducted war games in the region. It was the third time a North Korean missile overflew one of Japan's four main islands, with previous tests in 1998 and 2009.

Like prior versions in Raytheon's Standard Missile series, the SM-6 originally was developed to shoot down air threats like cruise missiles and aircraft.

"North Korea's reckless violation of its neighbours' territorial sovereignty and its direct threat to Japan's citizens have threatened both regional and worldwide peace and security", she said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says North Korea's latest provocative missile test is a reckless violation of Japan's sovereignty.

This is the second time a SM-6 missile has intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile target, according to the MDA. Washington and its allies called an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting for later Tuesday, but looked short on new ideas for stopping the nuclear and missile advances that are increasingly putting the US mainland within range. The military has conducted three tests in total, but during a test in June, the interceptor failed as a result of human error.

Separately, the MDA this week awarded Raytheon Missile Systems a $615 million contract, with $45 million in fiscal 2017 funding obligated initially, to produce 17 Standard Missile-3 Block IIA ballistic-missile interceptors and perform related work.
