Women's Raj: India skipper Mithali continues to raise bar”

Mithali Raj achieved the milestone against Australia but India lost the match by 8 wickets and are now in trouble for qualifying for the semi-finals of the ICC Women's World Cup in England.

Raj (34) surpassed former England skipper Charlotte Edwards' record of 5992 ODI runs and became highest run-getter in the women's cricket. She played 164 innings to beat Charlotte.

"Even for New Zealand, probably, it will be a do-or-die match". Recently she claimed that the lack of support in the batting unit did not allow her to improve her own batting. The image used for the post was not of Mithali, but her teammate, Punam Raut, who scored a wonderful century in a losing cause on Wednesday. The highlight of her captaincy came in 2005 when at the age of 22, she captained India to its first ever Women's World Cup final but were beaten by Australia. Ekta Bisht has been particularly impressive with her match winning five wicket haul against arch rivals Pakistan. Riding on fifties from Lanning and Ellyse Perry, Australia conquered the target in 45.1 overs and have a chance to finish on top in the points table. She scored nine centuries and 46 half-centuries during her career, her highest being an unbeaten 173 against Ireland. After a year or so, Sampath told that Mithali will not only go on to play for India but also break many records. As a team, we have to step up, as if we perform again like this it will not be enough.

She took her third four-wicket haul as Sri Lanka was bowled out for 101, while South Africa made that in 23.1 overs for the loss of just two wickets.

Mithali broke another record when she became the first player in the women's game to notch 6000 ODI runs when she launched leg-spinner Kristen Beams over long on for a big six. Once they were dismissed, Lanning and Perry completed the task with consummate ease. We made a decision to take on the bowling, and we did that pretty well today.

Raut's brilliant knock ended when she tried to hook Perry for six but could only pick out Nicole Bolton on the boundary rope.

But that brought Raj to the crease, and she and Raut put on 157 runs for the second wicket before the subcontinent side fell away late on. "There's been some very good cricket played, and every game from here on is going to be high- quality", Lanning said. It's something it has shown itself capable of, in the qualifier win over South Africa back in February and against England in the opening game of this World Cup, for instance.
