UT grad begins mission on Internaional Space Station”

Three men left Earth on Friday headed towards the International Space Station (ISS).

This morning, a trio of astronauts will make their way to the International Space Station, launching on top of a Russian Soyuz rocket from Kazakhstan.

Aboard the space station, the three astronaut will be joined by Expedition 52 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos and Flight Engineers Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer of NASA.

NASA's Randy Bresnik, Russia's Sergei Ryazansky and Italy's Paolo Nespoli blasted off from the Russia-leased launch pad in Kazakhstan at 21:41 p.m. Friday. The spacecraft will perform a flight to the ISS using a shortened six-hour scheme to allow the new expedition to arrive at the docking port of the Rassvet module already at 01:01 a.m. Moscow time on July 29. He has spent 160 days in the space.

The European Space Agency shared a video of the launch online. While they're there, they'll spend many hours in the weightless laboratories, conducting a variety of science experiments related to biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science.

He shared his enthusiasm for space in a tweet shortly before launch. This will be his second spaceflight and his first long-duration mission: He flew to the space station aboard a NASA shuttle in 2009.
