Trump says it again: MX will pay for wall”

Trump met today with President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico during the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Trump travelled to Mexico City when his campaign was sagging last August, and embarrassed Pena Nieto in the presidential palace by speaking publicly of his plans for fencing of the frontier.

President Donald Trump meets with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the G20 Summit, Friday, July 7, 2017, in Hamburg.

He replied with one word, "absolutely", when asked if he still planned to pursue that policy.

Trump has stuck to that campaign pledge to get Mexico to pay for the divisive project despite Pena Nieto repeatedly saying his country will not.

"Regarding payment of the border wall, both presidents recognized their clear and very public differences of opinion on this sensitive subject, and agreed to resolve their differences as part of a comprehensive discussion". The foreign minister said the leaders' conversation centered around the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement between US, Mexico, and Canada.

The Trump administration has emphasized the need to stem the flow of drugs, heroin in particular, from Mexico to the US.

The two presidents also explored a possible guest worker programme for migrants in the agriculture sector as well as the importance of "modernizing" NAFTA, according to a statement from Mexico's government released after the meeting.

"Trump says again that Mexico will pay for the wall", tweeted out Univision anchor Jorge Ramos.

Pena Nieto will also talk about the rights of Mexican migrants in the United States, the ministry said.

Trump looked to downplay the appearance of tension in their brief encounter on Friday, calling Pena Nieto a "friend". After Trump delivered some brief remarks, reporters shouted questions to him about whether Mexico is still going to pay for the wall.
