Trump brings Taiwanese manufacturing giant to Wisconsin

Trump brings Taiwanese manufacturing giant to Wisconsin”

The planned Foxconn plant, which was announced in a press conference at the White House, will initially create 3,000 jobs, with the maximum 13,000 jobs to be opened in the near future. It's expected to employ about 3,000 people at first and, after an initial $10 billion investment, the facility is scheduled to expand over a 2 1/2-year period, according to a person familiar with the plans who requested anonymity to discuss the announcement before it was made.

Our sister station 27 News is working to confirm a Wall Street Journal report that tech manufacturer Foxconn will choose a Wisconsin site for its expansion into the U.S.

In a White House speech, Trump said the financial commitment by Foxconn CEO Terry Gou was a direct result of his electoral win. The displays would be used for large-screen televisions.

Though there was no comment from Apple CEO, but Trump said he had talked to Cook and he was going forward with it. Foxconn promised in 2013 to invest $30 million and hire 500 workers for a new, high-tech factory in Pennsylvania that was never built. He has made several announcements since his election in November about USA investments by both foreign and domestic manufacturers, building on his campaign focus on boosting American jobs.

Trump said Foxconn "will invest in southeast Wisconsin, while a larger facility is constructed over the coming years, and that facility is now under negotiation".

"This is a great day for American manufacturing", said Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican.

"Foxconn is on a big list of industry leaders who believe that America's most prosperous decades are just ahead", said Trump.

But Foxconn has had a mixed record following up on promises to create new jobs in the United States.

Foxconn now has facilities in Virginia and in, each of which employ fewer than 1,000 workers, according to its website. He continued, "In other words if I didn't get elected he definitely would not be spending $10 billion dollars". But the company said it would be hiring 3,000 workers over four years - with the potential for further growth.

Whether this is one of the three "Apple" plants President Trump announced yesterday is unclear.

The incentives include $1.5 billion in state income tax credits for job creation, up to $1.35 billion in state income tax credits for capital investment and up to $150 million for the sales and use tax exemption. "That's where we want our jobs".
