Tech firms protest proposed changes to U.S. net neutrality rules”

"If net neutrality is lost, there is no way of turning back: Big corporations will own the internet, big corporations will decide what we see online, big corporations will dominate the public opinion, big corporations will dominate any future decision to be made in politics", said Matthias Pfau, co-founder and developer of Tutanota.

In May 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to review rules that prohibit broadband providers from slowing or blocking internet content delivery to consumers.

Led by three grassroots organizations - Fight for the Future, Free Press Action Fund and Demand Progress - more than 100,000 websites, online services and internet users have signed on to Wednesday's "Battle for the Net", according to a press release from Fight for the Future.

You can see images from what many more sites are doing on an Imgur page compiled by Even Greer, the activist who is leading the Day of Action.

Tech companies and websites disagree, saying without the regulations, online users rights to fair treatment and against things like censorship would be threatened.

The announcement was surprising considering that AT&T claims to be on the opposing side of the FCC's 2015 net neutrality rules. While the repeal appears likely, the "Day of Action" is reflective of 2014's successful "Internet Slowdown Day" protest that took place in favor of net neutrality regulations which resulted in the current legislation a year later.

"Nothing in this part prohibits reasonable efforts by a provider of broadband Internet access service to address copyright infringement or other unlawful activity".

In other words, Net Neutrality rules keep the internet free and open, allowing users to publish and access the content of their choice-that means you, photographers. The companies protesting the FCC move include Firefox, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Reddit, AirBnB, Twitter, Snapchat, OkCupid and PornHub.

"Tomorrow, AT&T will join the "Day of Action" for preserving and advancing an open Internet", AT&T's senior executive vice president of external and legislative affairs Bob Quinn wrote in a blog post this afternoon.

Without net neutrality, no new company will be able to start-up their business without investing a considerable amount of money in the Internet Service Provider's plans. "Net Neutrality needs your help".

However, new FCC chairman Ajit Pai wishes to get rid of the Open Internet Order on competition grounds. The "fee" is satire and mocks what could happen in the net neutrality rules are dumped, the group said in a statement. In that time, telecom industry representatives hope that the FCC will have reviewed public comments and returned ISP classification to that of an information service rather than a Title II common carrier.

The protest principally is aimed at a move by the U.S. communications regulator Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to remove an Obama-era rule that bars prioritisation of traffic. We think that was partly because his net neutrality views are deeply held and partly because they sync perfectly with the White House's anti-regulation objectives.
