New £10 note design unveiled

New £10 note design unveiled”

Yesterday, the Bank of England unveiled a new 10-pound banknote featuring Jane Austen, on the 200th anniversary of her death. The Pride And Prejudice author joins such other literary greats as Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, though the Austen £10 banknote is the only one now in circulation.

Carney, who unveiled the note at Winchester Cathedral said the notes serve as "repositories of the country's collective memory, promoting awareness of the United Kingdom's glorious history and highlighting the contributions of its greatest citizens", the Associated Press reported.

As it is made using the same materials as the polymer £5 note, the new tenner will again contain small amounts of tallow: rendered beef and mutton fat.

Shortly after becoming the Bank of England governor in 2013, Mr Carney announced that Austen would replace scientist Charles Darwin on the £10 note.

It has cost the bank £46million to print the £5 note and £24 million to print the £10 note.

The new note also includes a new tactile feature to assist the visually impaired, which was developed in conjunction with the Royal National Institute of Blind People. By the beginning of the 20th Century Jane Austen was a super star of English literature and her fame continues into the era of her likeness on the nation's currency.

The Bank of England's head bean-counter claimed the quote was meant to be both ironic and honest. The element in the note had created an issue with vegans and some religious groups questioning it after its launch in last September.

The controversy surrounds the quote that accompanies the picture of Austen, 'I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading'.

Meanwhile, a limited supply of a new £2 coin honouring Jane Austen has been put into circulation by the Royal Mint.

An illustration of Miss Elizabeth Bennet undertaking "The examination of all the letters which Jane had written to her"- from a drawing by Isabel Bishop (1902-1988).

Polymer is a thin, flexible plastic film that is seen as more durable and secure and is used also for notes in Australia and Canada.

More information on the new note is available on The New Ten website.
