More than 100 people exercise California's new right to die

More than 100 people exercise California's new right to die”

The similar law (Right-to-die Law) was approved by OR state government and many other states two decades ago that left majority of white, strongly educated cancer patients of age 60 dead.

The report further breaks down the types of illnesses reported by the people seeking assistance in ending their lives.

California is among a handful of other states that permit doctor-assisted deaths, including Montana, Colorado, Oregon, Washington D.C., Washington state and Vermont.

California's End of Life Option Act went into effect June 9, 2016, allowing assisted suicide in the state after years of contentious debate.

California's End of Life Option Act gained national attention after Brittany Maynard - a woman who was diagnosed with a stage 4 malignant brain tumor - moved from California to Oregon in order to legally obtain life-ending medication to die under the Oregon Death With Dignity Act.

The report analyzes statistics only through December 31 of 2016, so its numbers understate use of the law to date. Race figures include people with multiple ethnicities, which accounts for the discrepancy between the announced total and individual numbers of people who took the drugs. Perman passed away peacefully - in his own home, on his own terms - after years of battling cancer.

"It's kind of hard to explain, " Witherell said.

"I do not want to die". The cards he was dealt he played the best he could. While the report does say that 21 of those people died from other causes than suicide, it was not clear in the survey what had happened with the other 59 patients who had asked for, but not used, the drug. The law also states that doctors themselves should not prescribe the drug to them until n unless patients demand it.

"Patients in OR have been refused chemotherapy, but their insurance companies will pay for so-called "aid-in-dying" drugs".

Writing the lethal prescriptions is completely voluntary for doctors and medical facilities, and some, including all Catholic and church-affiliated hospitals, have not allowed their physicians to prescribe such medicines.

The data from the California Department of Public Health found that 191 individuals received prescriptions for aid-in-dying drugs between June 9, 2016, and December 31 of the same year.
