Mexico: 28 Dead in Latest Clash Between Organized Criminal Groups”

At least 28 inmates were killed when a brutal fight broke out in a prison in the Mexican Pacific resort of Acapulco on Thursday, one of the worst outbreaks of violence in the country's troubled penal system in recent years.

Officials initially put the death toll at five, but later said mutilated bodies were found strewn throughout the wing where shots were heard early Thursday.

A security cordon has now been set up around Las Cruces federal prison in Acapulco as state police have regained control, working with riot police and the army. Three more inmates were wounded in the violence, Mr Alvarez said.

It was the latest deadly riot in Mexico's chronically overcrowded prisons, where corruption abounds, inmates often have de facto control, and contraband weapons and drugs are rife. It also said gunshots had been fired in the maximum-security wing, apparently by prisoners.

In June, Mexico's governmental rights agency issued a report that said numerous country's prisons are unsafe, overcrowded and understaffed.

Mexico's Roman Catholic church, meanwhile, condemned the killing of 73-year-old Luis Lopez Villa, a priest whose body was found in La Paz township east of Mexico City on Wednesday night.

Acapulco is the biggest city in Guerrero, one of Mexico's most lawless states and a centre of opium poppy production that has been a major concern to USA officials.

This is Mexico's deadliest prison violence since 49 inmates were killed in February past year in a riot at the Topo Chico prison in Monterrey, in the north-east.

The fighting continued during the morning until state law enforcement, with the help of federal police officers and military personnel, were able to surround the compound and force their way in.

That clash was between inmates aligned with the Zetas and Gulf drug cartels.

The prison carnage was particularly embarrassing to Mexico as it came the same day U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary John Kelly was visiting Guerrero, which lies in the southwest of the country.
