Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize laureate imprisoned in China, dies aged 61

Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize laureate imprisoned in China, dies aged 61”

A furious China responded on Friday to global censure over the death of Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo by describing the decision to award him the peace prize in 2010 as "blasphemy", and said it had lodged protests with several countries for meddling in its "domestic affairs" by speaking up for the pro-democracy activist.

Liu Xiaobo, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for "inciting subversion of state power" after he helped write a petition known as "Charter 08" calling for sweeping political reforms.

"The Chinese government bears a heavy responsibility for his premature death", said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel committee, according to The Times. The stark image also speaks of her own suffering these past few years - struggling with isolation enforced by police, heart ailments and depression.

On July 13, Liu Xiaobo, China's most outspoken dissident, died of liver cancer after receiving medical parole from a jail sentence awarded in 2008.

Liu, China's most prominent political prisoner, is being treated for late-stage liver cancer.

"Mr. Liu dedicated his life to intellectual discovery, the pursuit of freedom and the protection of human rights in China", Freeland said in her official statement. I think Liu Xiaobo's death really closed up a door, a door for peaceful transaction of China become a civilised society.

Tsai, who is loathed by Beijing for her refusal to endorse its view that Taiwan is Chinese territory, wrote on her Facebook page that Liu's passing would be marked by all those around the world concerned with Chinese human rights.

"Some news came out when Liu Xiaobo was still with us, that it was Liu Xia's wish to have his ashes scattered at sea", the friend said.

Still, some analysts say, his ideals of freedom of expression and improvement of the human condition, among others, will live on, his place in history assured.

A picture of 2010 Nobel Peace Laureate Liu Xiaobo is seen at an exhibition at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo December 10, 2010. The futility of it all as nothing has changed in all of Liu's years of fighting for reform in the Communist Party-dominated regime is what the free world will have to live with.

Liu's wife remains under house arrest.

As tributes to China's Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo flood global media, those in China are refraining from giving prominence to the influential dissident.

"Ever since leaving the safety and comfort of America to lead the protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989, Liu sealed his fate as a persistent focus of persecution from the authoritarian PRC (People's Republic of China)", Cruz said.

Jared Genser, a USA lawyer who represented Liu, said all contact with Liu Xia had been cut off in the past 48 hours.

"Despite the imprisonment and separation from the wife he adored that could have fueled anger and bitterness, Liu Xiaobo declared that he had no hatred for those who pursued and prosecuted him", Zeid said.

"Allowing Liu Xiaobo to leave China and his wife to go with him would be too big a concession and would look like buckling under pressure", he added.

House Foreign Affairs subcommittee chairman Chris Smith (R-N.J.) said Beijing is responsible for the recent death of Chinese dissident and human rights activist Liu Xiaobo. But whereas Xi vaguely defined this dream as working toward a stronger Communist Party-controlled country, she defined it as the kind of democratic China that Liu had strived for.

China signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in 1998 but took care never to ratify it. Harassment and acts of violence against civil rights activists and citizen-journalists have increased since 2013, when Xi Jinping took over as president.

He said Beijing had prevented Liu from travelling and making a final denunciation of its authoritarian rule to avoid "an enormous public relations disaster ... this one is bad enough".
