HTC announces standalone Snapdragon 835-powered Vive VR headset for China

HTC announces standalone Snapdragon 835-powered Vive VR headset for China”

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is being marketed on the back that it is VR and AR-ready from grounds-up and the newly announced Standalone Vive VR headset is based on the same mobile processor.

Interestingly, rather than integrate one of the existing mobile platforms into the headset (like Google Daydream), HTC chose to offer its own Viveport store content in China. "Partnering with Qualcomm to deliver an easy to use and more affordable Vive VR system will enable us to make premium standalone VR widely accessible to the masses in China".

When will this standalone VR Vive headset be released?

Finally, content developed for the HTC VIVE Standalone VR headset will be created using tools compatible with Qualcomm's VR platform. This new VR Headset is called The Vive Standalone and it is exclusive to the Chinese market. However it's now only coming to Chinese markets.

Regardless, even if this HTC headset is reminiscent of what Google will be announcing in the coming months, it's highly unlikely that this particular version will ever make its way to markets outside of China.

Pricing information was also noticeable by its absence, but it's being billed as a more affordable entry into the world of VR, so you can expect it to be considerably cheaper than the $800 the current VIVE hardware retails at.

HTC has revealed that it plans to release a standalone Vive VR headset in the Chinese market at some point in the near future. As is the case with all tethered headsets, it requires a powerful PC setup to function.

In a statement released today, HTC explained that the idea is to build momentum within China in an effort to "lead the global VR market", which is a strategy also used by many smartphone makers. The Viveport platform was introduced by HTC sometime past year and offers consumers with the option of streaming VR-content at their convenience.

The company is quiet about the price so it's not known how much the standalone headset is cost, but it's likely going to be lower than the Vive's $800 price tag.
